Summer is a Cul de Sac

Dreaming of watery sidewalks as the heat oppresses even the concrete. It is the one-time hydrant danced in and old fairytales rewritten in the shady garage, the too skinny skate legs that caught the slightest breeze while Cyndi promised girls fun. It is the August vacation, sure, but it is mostly Autumn’s Eve, crowded shores and shopping malls, humid mini golf and mosquito-y park concerts. And fall is a downhill left, through an actual neighborhood with many openings — a new comp book, a pack of pencils, a duffel bag with so many memories, empty for now of regret. Imagine the carnival coming just as the air cools and the leaves change, as the high school football game and its bride the homecoming dance show up, king and queen. How much of that yellow belly innocence could be caught, and unlike the fireflies on hot summer nights, hold the interception, shoot the water into the clown’s mouth, and keep the teddy bear? Kiss the new boy, the just met one with all the chemistry of science lab instead of the boy who lived on the cul-de-sac all those years and finally just gave in. Summer was a trickster, fun but fleeting. Fall holy.
